It\u2019s not fun, to say the least. But for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/7zcXUc2JyOmByvlz0dlWwL?si=FM2sBDlYQqK30_b1DtKNWg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soft Streak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s something they\u2019re not only learned to work around, but to grow from.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LA-based duo, <\/span><b>Tori Schachne<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Colton Toy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, met in college in the early 2010s, and have spent the last decade making music in multiple iterations. In 2018, they released their first single, \u201cRide\u201d, as Soft Streak, a breezy electric pop project featuring Colton\u2019s airy keyboard work and Tori\u2019s easy going, smooth vocals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The duo\u2019s recently released single,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/73kVdCYoyBcaet2okmHksi?si=31521cd451604d83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cAlone\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a bit of a sonic departure, swapping electric sounds for a piano leading the stripped down ballad that puts Tori\u2019s lyrics, unmasked, at the forefront. But to understand how the band got there, we have to back up a few years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn\u2019t long after Soft Streak formed that the pandemic hit, and the two found themselves at home, looking for an outlet. \u201cWe were consuming a lot, we were cooking a lot, [and] I didn\u2019t feel super creative,\u201d Tori said. They decided to join a weekly online writing group, where songwriters gathered for video calls to workshop new ideas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat was really helpful,\u201d Tori said. \u201cA lot of creation happens in a bubble, and not that everything needs feedback, but sometimes it\u2019s nice to be like, \u2018is this doing what I want it to be doing\u2019? Or just understanding how someone else might be perceiving it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Soft Streak - Ride | Sofar Los Angeles\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zP88tJxVEec?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pretty soon, Soft Streak was creating a steady string of singles, eventually refining the ones they loved to create two EPs, 2022\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/2KUinG8kbiD65UyQmwEWLy?si=D_YGJ48uT0-mX-uOPtsUWQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insider Baseball<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a forthcoming EP the duo\u2019s been steadily releasing singles from.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the big sonic influences for the EPs came from Soft Streak\u2019s listening habits\u2014 lots of <\/span><b>Andy Shauf, Neopholic, Weyes Blood, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> Waxahatchee. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But another big influence was the band\u2019s visual background. Both Tori and Colton have experience in music video editing, and the two often use visuals as another medium of creativity, either directing their own videos, or creating little shorts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a nice way, if you\u2019re in a rut creatively, to do something related but not totally in the same box,\u201d\u00a0 Tori said. \u201cWe had a music video where I was on the toilet in different settings, and I had the idea for a long time, but we weren\u2019t sure what song we could fit into it. I didn\u2019t write the [\u201cA Woman on the Verge\u201d] thinking of that concept, but then it sort of worked out that they came together in that way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A Woman on the Verge - Soft Streak\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/19Jr4cL57i4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The visuals also give Soft Streak a chance to share a little more of their humor. \u201cThere\u2019s a fun side, even if the music isn\u2019t necessarily upbeat stuff,\u201d Colton said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, the duo\u2019s up for whatever experience the listener wants to have with the music. With their latest track, \u201cAlone\u201d, the duo had a few versions of the track with bigger production, but opted for the barebones form, \u201cto be more honest, or truthful and concise,\u201d Tori said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She continued:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMaybe something about why we wanted EPs is because We wanted to just start putting stuff out, and now it\u2019s out of our hands.
