Creative minds run wild in this charming collegiate town, and we’re fortunate to see more than a few of them bring their flair to the Sofar community. Here are just five artists we love in Boston.

1. Beane

Brennan Hepler, known as Beane, arrived in Boston some years back to study at Berklee, bringing his blend of jazz, soul, and pop along with him. This Sofar stands out as a favorite, as the artist sings of positivity inspired by his grandmother, with the simple chorus hook, or reminder, “we’re alright.”

2. The Q-Tip Bandits

The indie-pop five-piece formed in 2018, but they already feel like staples of their home city. This Sofar from Winchester shows their spirit and sound– simple harmonies, laid back beats, and that subtle trumpet-muted counter melody that feels almost conversational.

3. Zach Seals

The artist describes his own sound as “Dramatic indie pop power ballads and sad bops you can twerk to” and that seems just about right. His Sofar performance of “I Don’t Hate You” is highly energetic, theatrical, and clearly just a really fun time. And that sparse monologue moment around 1:30? That’s when the performance really takes off.

4. Hawthorn

Sweet harmonies and the gentle sway of bluegrass? Hawthorn’s got it. The group, formed and led by Heather Scott and Taylor Holland, makes folky music that feels like a well-worn pair of boots. And this song, one meant to remind us we’re just not in total control, no matter how badly we want to be? We all need to play this jam on occasion.

5. The Thistle Brothers

Cameron and Devin are a brotherly duo making music not only for the good sounds, but good causes too. Income from each of their singles, be it streams, downloads, or otherwise, goes to charities. So, help yourself and others by listening to this familial pop sound.

Photo credit: Beane peforming Sofar Boston, image via YouTube

Ah, the sweet city heart of New England.
