June is jam-packed with new releases and new artists to watch. We have New Yorkers cultivating community, artisan skincare at the merch table, and a rebrand for the y2k bubblegum ‘Popstar’. It’s too good to gatekeep- here’s your New Music Alert!<span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span></p> <h2> 1. <span style="font-weight: 400;">Blake Anthony | </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">BDE</span></i></h2> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Blake Anthony’s artistry cannot be put into a box (unless it’s a box with his sold-out skincare, of course.) Blake Anthony is a multifaceted creator, from anime inspiration for album art to </span><a href="https://www.blakeanthony.shop/product-page/honey-mask-blake-s-body-butter" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">hand-making artisan body butter</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The Twitch Streamer and Seattle-based hip-hop artist just dropped his latest album </span><a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/5KrkOqUO5pNPWMqWMaoq13" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">BDE</span></i></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, a refreshing compilation of clean, classic hip-hop and R&B. While giving us smooth, soon-to-be-classics, Blake keeps it Blake on tracks like </span><a href="https://open.spotify.com/track/1txaMCF60EFbKuQWAFankl?si=bf75fe6394ef4496" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Sailor Moon”</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and </span><a href="https://open.spotify.com/track/0s1mQqCGTffdBmZ8SQxonw?si=cd8f2c34c8b14d75" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Grand Kai-” </span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">shouting out homages to anime and his Twitch community. If you can’t catch him on his next Livestream, Sofar Seattle- we’re looking at you for another show date!</span></p> <p><iframe title="PINK LACE by BLAKE ANTHONY prod. by PHESO ft. The Colombian-born, Brooklyn, NY-raised artist, La Lulu, released </span><a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/3lJ6Y0lsXhrwv4BVfd6F8O?si=BBewydPhTWOcrKDysvVYPA" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lululandia</span></i></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. While it’s nearly a self-titled drop, the Latin Grammy-winning violinist isn’t shy with her experimental style. La Lulu enriches her Latin roots with her urban upbringing, creating the heat we’re talking about. </span></p> <p><iframe title="La Lulu - Poppin | Sofar NYC" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/uuLR1f1HolE?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <h2> 3. <span style="font-weight: 400;">Benicio Bryant |</span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Popstar</span></i></h2> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Benicio Bryant has arrived in your dance playlist, and his </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">MTV</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Video Music Award can’t be far behind. His latest hit, “</span><a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/0RtnJn4LQKCUUfcPeB8kKE?si=mhr4aEU5TZuodxTlSUzQsQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Popstar”</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, throws punchy hooks alongside his ‘this-must-be-viral’ vocal control. At 20, he’s already serving arena-ready performances with the ease and commitment of someone who’s been doing this for decades. Oh, and he’s</span><a href="https://beniciobryant.com/#tour" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;"> teasing a tour</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">? The album is rooted in years of education, activism, and unflinching self-reflection. Check out this expert-approved list of unforgettable Sofar moments!</span></p> <h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Allah-Las | “Catamaran”</span></h2> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“One of my favorite bands playing in an LA dorm room on the verge of a big break. This video is a testament to Sofar’s acute talent-finding ability and a literal example of our goal: to make fans feel like they’re in an artist’s bedroom.” – Ryan</span></p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Allah-Las - Catamaran | Sofar Los Angeles" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/AelqxdeZcrA?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Beans on Toast | “The War on War”</span></h2> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Beans (on Toast) is one of my favourite British folk singers, and I recently discovered this performance he did 10 years ago! <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/1f92f.png" alt="🤯" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> He’s talking about this ‘new song’ and, that he can’t remember the first line because it’s new—so it feels like a time capsule. This track is now one of his most popular songs, and when I saw him again live last year, he reflected on it in a modern context and whether or not he should still play it. This is what I love about folk and protest music—it doesn’t matter how old the songs are, they will always hit a level of social consciousness and responsibility. I think we could all be a little more like Beans <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/1f9e1.png" alt="🧡" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />.” – Fran</span></p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Beans on Toast - The War On War | Sofar London" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/sKTGG-z4Q1M?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ben Cosgrove | “Pine”</span></h2> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“This performance always hits me in the feels and showcases the combination of artistry and intimacy I can’t find anywhere except at Sofar shows. The entire performance feels like I’ve bottled up a perfect summer night and can relive it over and over. Moments like Enrique’s jazzy runs at 3:57 or the seamless communication between him and his accompanist at 1:00 capture an intimacy I’ve only ever experienced at Sofar shows.” – Angela</span></p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Enrique Ive - Summer God | Sofar Gran Canaria" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/R3nCL2yTy-k?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Khruangbin | “August Twelve”</span></h2> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Some of my favorite shows are in small, intimate venues, and I’m so jealous I wasn’t at this </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Khruangbin Sofar Bristol show… nine <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/1f44f.png" alt="👏" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> years <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/1f44f.png" alt="👏" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />ago. The sheer joy in the room is palpable and infectious even today. It’s worth watching all the way through—at the 4:21 mark, it kicks into the highest gear. I can’t help thinking about the history between Jews and Germans and the way humanity heals. Also, it busted any old myths that Sofars need to be chill, sit-down affairs. Welcome back to the ‘90s, ‘00s, and ‘10s—three iconic decades of music, deeply entrenched in words like “iconic“, “ironic, and, yes, “toxic” (see below).</p> <p>Here are seven of our favorite covers from the era, performed by some of the most talented Sofar artists on the stage today. Unlike Y2K, these covers have had a lasting impact.</p> <h2>Anthony Hall — “No Diggity” (Cover) by Blackstreet (1996)</h2> <p>For all intents and purposes, we like the way he works it. In this clip, Anthony Hall covers Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” in an intimate, backyard show in Las Vegas. It’s smooth, sultry, and leaves us rocking our beanies side-to-side every time we watch it.</p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Anthony Hall - No Diggity (Blackstreet Cover) | Sofar Las Vegas" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/wx_DXVFaDvs?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <h2>Sonia Barcelona — “Fly Away” (Cover) by Lenny Kravitz (1998)</h2> <p>If you can immediately imagine the neon-greenish music video of this seminal Kravitz anthem…you’re not alone. In this cover slash mashup, Sonia Barcelona brings “Old Town Road” into the fold. Sonia, Lenny, Billy Ray, and Lil Nas X all at once? What a quad.</p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Sonia Barcelona - Fly Away/Old Town Road Mashup (Cover) | Sofar Las Vegas" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/I2roozllB_4?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <h2>Rebecca McCartney — “Toxic” (Cover) by Britney Spears (2003)</h2> <p>There exists a type of cover that is such a departure from the original song that you can hardly believe both occupy the same space in your temporal lobe. Rebecca McCartney’s phenomenally raw cover of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” does just that. Be prepared to want both on your playlists—for very different occasions.</p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Rebecca McCartney - Toxic | Sofar NYC" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/z-ur96UC_SY?start=12&feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <h2>Spectrum — “What Else Is There?” (Cover) by Röyksopp Cover (2005)</h2> <p>Blink and you might find yourself in 2005, strobing the night away at an underground Oslo rave. In this full-throated tribute, Spectrum puts a modern spin on Röyksopp’s critically acclaimed single “What Else Is There?” at a packed show in Budapest.</p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Spectrum - What Else Is There? (Röyksopp Cover) | Sofar Bucharest" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/OTpZVzcpCUs?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <h2>Joshy Soul — “Electric Feel” (Cover) by MGMT (2007)</h2> <p>MGMT’s “Electric Feel” throws us back to a certain time, a place, and an entire way of being. This jazzy, big band cover by Joshy Soul brings back the hit to a sashaying audience in San Francisco. Scrub to 1:23 for a crowd-pleasing sax solo.</p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Joshy Soul - Electric Feel | Sofar San Francisco" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/yTaKr3IZvBE?start=53&feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <h2>Cole Brandt — “Get Lucky” (Cover) by Daft Punk (2013)</h2> <p>We’re up all night to get some… epic jamming! In this clip, Chicago-based guitarist Cole Brandt unleashes an instrumental take on Daft Punk’s unforgettable (truly, that beat is never leaving you) 2013 hit.</p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Cole Brandt - Get Lucky (Daft Punk Cover) | Sofar Chicago" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/HTTY7HcRNao?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <h2>Idly — “Lost on You” (Cover) by LP (2016)</h2> <p>In the eight years since its release, LP’s live performance of “Lost on You” has garnered over 1.4 billion views on YouTube. In the comments of Idly’s peaceful cover of the haunting single, fans describe the upside-down remake as “angelic”, “soft vintage” and sung “in cursive.” Hear it for yourself:</p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Idyl - Lost on you (LP Cover) | Sofar Liège" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/JdBe8E8ya8M?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <p><a href="http://sofarsounds.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ready to see artists like these in real life? Just play it — we’ll wait.) After soaring to fame and almost stepping away from music, Tones has brought more vulnerability to her second album, Beautifully Ordinary. We were honored to host her at Sofar London for an intimate preview we’re still dreaming about. Check out her performance of “Figure it Out” and stay tuned for a second release from that unforgettable show, dropping soon…</p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Tones And I - Figure It Out | Sofar London" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-utap8fQyfc?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <h2>Jon Muq – Runaway | Sony Summer Series</h2> <p>After releasing his debut solo album this year, <a href="https://open.spotify.com/artist/5zAZlJoWriAEhhOlm96vPe?si=eh2qwHo0QAqLyXjhbjfQrQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jon Muq</a> solidly represents the fresh talent emerging from the iconic Austin music scene. Last July, Muq, a Ugandan native, captivated the eager audience at the Sony Summer Series we held with Sony Electronics with his heartfelt performance of “Runaway.” His smooth, Paul McCartney-inspired style is a must-save—watch the performance here:</p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Jon Muq I Runaway | Sony Summer Series" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DIu-15UR8i0?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <h2>Rootbeer Richie & The Reveille – Everybody But You | Sony Summer Series</h2> <p>For our second Summer Series show with Sony Electronics, <a href="https://open.spotify.com/artist/0L8UtqBJvyrDFhPuJQ8Oq8?si=40NFsXa3SG6UNGsZSPs0sw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rootbeer Richie & The Reveille</a> lit up The Riverside in Boulder, Colorado with an unforgettable performance of “Everybody But You.” Hailing from the bayou but now thriving in the Rockies, Rootbeer Richie & The Reveille brought their signature swampy rhythm & blues. See for yourself why this show brought a packed-house!</p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Rootbeer Richie & The Reveille I Everybody But You | Sony Summer Series" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-UprtY52abQ?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <h2>Yeemz – In The City | Sofar Los Angeles</h2> <p>At this Sofar Los Angeles show in June, Santa Monica-based cellist and singer-songwriter <a href="https://open.spotify.com/artist/3esOPpGsiTP1Rc5lS1Jr6a?si=wlovvxYuTPGbBkeRomq1Xg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Yeemz</a> delivered an intimate performance of her recently released song “In the City.” Drawing from a blend of indie-folk, classical music, and literary influences, Yeemz drew our audience into her deeply personal and unique sound.</p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Yeemz - In The City | Sofar Los Angeles" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3BVCQgupZv4?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <h2>Desta French – Malas | Live at Sofar Manchester x Madrí Excepcional</h2> <p><a href="https://open.spotify.com/artist/0Wqws1yyGkVRdAd7ncSW3W?si=4AwMohlxSQuIbDMqISZCLQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Desta French</a>, a London-based singer-songwriter with Colombian and Italian roots, is no stranger to the voices of the UK’s Latin community. Recently, Sofar collaborated with Madrí Excepcional for a night of latin-influenced music in Manchester. While Desta’s songs have primarily been in English, she performed “Malas,” a captivating Spanish track that beautifully blends her Latin heritage with the acoustic sounds of guitar.</p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Desta French I Malas | Live at Sofar Manchester x Madrí Excepcional" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MA7RPPE-jH8?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <h2>Olivia Dean – LIVE | Sofar London</h2> <p>Throwing it back to 2020,<a href="https://open.spotify.com/artist/00x1fYSGhdqScXBRpSj3DW?si=JWJbDsQdRTaUsDTBo1YqVg" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Olivia Dean</a>, a then up-and-coming neo-soul artist from Haringey, London, recorded a live session for Sofar London. Not gonna lie, this is one of those videos we play on repeat. Her soulful blend of Motown and contemporary simply doesn’t age, so it’s no surprise it’s been trending again on our channel. Enjoy.</p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Olivia Dean - LIVE | Sofar London" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KptlrKLIUE0?start=1&feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <h2>Luedji Luna – Banho de Folhas | Sofar São Paulo</h2> <p>The ever-talented Brazilian singer-songwriter<a href="https://open.spotify.com/artist/0sWTkzCrdEvuX7Du6MFLzc?si=NWhxUwc1S86MJGopPdVaMw" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Luedji Luna</a> was already crafting her unique Latin and jazz sound before dropping her debut album, which later earned her a Latin Grammy nomination. Though this performance may be a throwback, it continues to trend because… it’s just that good. Now with two albums to her name, Luedji’s early work shows just how far she’s come! See for yourself:</p> <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Luedji Luna - Banho de Folhas | Sofar São Paulo" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/vDvl6mJr6aQ?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <p><a href="https://www.sofarsounds.com/">Ready to see artists like these IRL?
