This time last year we launched our online listening room just ten days after in-real-life shows had been canceled indefinitely. Since then, hundreds of artists and thousands of audience members around the world have connected over what we love most — live music. Here’s what happened along the way:
From your living room, to your daily walk, to your favorite picnic blanket, music-lovers around the world have found all new ways to create space where music matters.
All listening room shows are free, but over $75,000 was raised through donations given directly to performing artists and to the Sofar Sounds Global Artist Fund, benefiting Sofar artists that rely the most on our shows for live performance income. The average performing artist received $500 in donations, including the $100 show fee from Sofar.
The pandemic has taught us that human connection is more important than ever. In the listening room, artists connected with music-lovers all over the world in real-time through moving performances and a live chatroom.
Full transparency — we had never hosted a livestream performance before we launched the listening room. Luckily our network of talented artists and experienced production team guided us through the ups and downs to get where we are today.
We really miss celebrating life’s milestones in person, but this year we were grateful to find that our community of diverse artists are ready and willing to honor holidays virtually as well. From a lively week of Pride performances, to celebrating Black History Month, Women’s History Month, and the stories behind the Hawaiian islands, we’ve shared some very special moments over livestreams.
The magic continues in the listening room with live performances from all new artists every week. And don’t miss our Best of the Listening Room series, where interview performers and pull standout performances for your viewing pleasure.
Life is short, music is precious, and we’re very grateful to cherish an all-new way to connect with the Sofar community. Tune in to the listening room every week to discover new artists, connect with global audiences, and (virtually) gather around good music.
