We caught up with Sofar alum and American Idol finalist, Scarypoolparty, to learn more about his life in music. Watch his Keep Listening performance and learn about his musical influences, dream collabs, and so much more, in the interview below!

First CD, tape, or record you bought:

Pretty Hate Machine by Nine Inch Nails.

If you could only hear one album on repeat the rest of your life:

Pink Moon by Nick Drake. It has everything from amazing guitar playing to dreamy vocals. It’s super chill. That album shaped the way I play and record guitar.

First concert:

Not the first show that I ever went to, but there is this hardcore band called Bane, and they played this skate shop in Fullerton, CA. The show was soooo insane.

You reach the end of life without seeing ____ live, you’ll have a lifetime of regrets:

Rage Against the Machine

Did you inherit any music tastes or artist preferences from your parents?

No, I didn’t! But it’s all good! I love my parents so much.

What’s your dream artist to see at a Sofar show and why?

Bjork! I think every performance she does is a masterpiece and to see her at a Sofar show would be a dream come true.

What would you play in the opening credits in a movie about your life?

Anything from Justin Bieber.

Can you name a moment that you realized how important music is to you? How did that moment shape your transition into a music career?

The first time I heard Slipknot's self-titled album. When I first heard the song (sic), it really had an effect on me because of how brutal it is. And of course, “Wait and Bleed," is one of my all-time favorite songs. The whole album is a masterpiece, and that first listen had a lasting effect on me and how important music and lyrics are in my life.

Dream collaboration and why?

Hans Zimmer would be the guy! I feel like I would learn so much because of how talented he is. From writing songs to scoring, there is an endless flow of creativity that is Hans Zimmer. I think if I ever were to collaborate with him, it would be the greatest day of my life.
