Best of the Listening Room | Meet Brekky Boy
February 3, 2021

Brekky Boy is a piano-driven powerhouse from Bondi with an invigorating original sound combining classic jazz with emotional contemporary flare. Watch his stunning cover of Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles” featured this week in our Best of the Listening Room series.

Can you name a moment that you realized how important music is to you? How did that moment shape your transition into a music career?

I first watched Finding Nemo as a kid and that soundtrack blew my mind. That sparked my obsession with film music (specifically Thomas Newman) and the piano.

Are there any specific albums that have had a big influence on your music career and style?

Shadow Theatre - Tigran Hamasyan

Black Radio - Robert Glasper Experiment

An Ancient Observer - Tigran Hamasyan

re:member - Olafur Arnalds

Dream collaboration and why?

Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) — his music brings me to tears and his approach is completely unique to anything I’ve heard.

How has your music career changed in the past year since the start of COVID-19?

It’s been annihilated, but we’ve been lucky to still have a residency at a local jazz club (Foundry 616) each month plus other shows here and there. The crowds have always been incredibly supportive which we deeply appreciate.

How have you been keeping busy throughout quarantine?

Playing Super Mario on SNES, surfing all day, I wrote a new album (due for release in March) and spending a hell of a lot of time down at my parents’ treehouse.

If you could play a Sofar show anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you want it to be?

Longyearbyen - Svalbard

Any projects you’re working on right now?

Some mad collabs with Beso Palma.
