Artist Dispatch: What artists are listening to right now
Artist DispatchJune 23, 2020

COVID-19 has undoubtedly disrupted many industries, including our beloved music industry. Album releases have been postponed, and all live shows have been canceled until an unknown later date, putting artists’ already tenuous livelihood on shakier ground. But, things aren’t all doom and gloom. Artists are working harder than ever to share their music and connect with fans through creative livestreams, quarantine collaborations, and more.

We wanted to get a real glance at what it means to be a musician during this time, so we gathered a group of Sofar alumni, spanning Sydney to Seattle to Toronto, to weigh in. Every week, they’ll be sharing their thoughts on different topics related to this crazy time we’re all in.

DISPATCH #1: A LOOK AT THE CREATIVE PROCESS DURING COVID-19

DISPATCH #2: THE REALITY OF COVID-19 ON WORKING ARTISTS' CAREERS

DISPATCH #3: WHERE SOFAR ARTISTS ARE FINDING INSPIRATION RIGHT NOW

DISPATCH #4: HOW SOFAR ARTISTS ARE PRACTICING A LITTLE SELF-CARE

DISPATCH #5: WHAT ARTISTS ARE LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW

This week we asked them:

What have you been listening to during stay at home/self isolation? Have you discovered anything new or going back to old classics?

I have been listening to lots of old school Latin boleros and Cuban music. I’ve also been jamming to Calypso and some oldies reggae. I think hearing music with sweet and upbeat melodies and rhythms has been soul-soothing.

-Vivian Garcia, Chicago

I’m mostly shuffling through different albums, binaural beats, and my likes. Look me up on Spotify, follow my “I like” playlist. It’s always being updated!

-Clarence James, Austin

I have really gotten into Fiona Apple’s new album, “Fetch The Bolt Cutters”. I’ve also rediscovered Regina Spektor’s music and reminiscing on being so inspired by her that I learned how to play almost every song on “What We Saw From The Cheap Seats”. I’ve also been listening to YBN Cordae’s record “The Lost Boy”.

-Tissa Rahim, Vancouver

Stevie Wonder. Tom Misch. Lianne La Havas. Hell yeah.

- Kiaran aka Kubla, Toronto

Probably super embarrassing, but I've been listening to a lot of Tik Tok songs. And going back to old classics. We have one of our songs being featured on The CW next week, so we’ve been listening to TV show playlists and finding new tunes as well.

- Myra of Stereo RV, Seattle

I’m finding lately that I care more about finding new releases from artists I like and am making an effort to listen to new albums. Some favorites right now are the new records by Favela, Real Estate, Thundercat, Moses Boyd, Jeff Parker, and Makaya McCraven. I’m excited about Vinyl Williams' upcoming record.

-Yasmin Williams, Baltimore

I’ve always enjoyed listening to saxophone solos and instrumentals. However, I also listen to a lot of my favorite singers and also some of my peers who I am a complete fan of!

- Miracle Foster, Dallas

Personally I've been listening to a lot of Big Wild, Maggie Rogers, and some other feel-good artists that I love. I also made a collaborative playlist that I've been asking friends to add to and it's pretty epic.

- Aubrey of LVDY, Denver

I’ve been listening to a lot of ASMR (look it up). I’ve also been listening to Aussie artists Bayonet Slim, Beso Palma, MMG, HEKKA, The Serviette Union on repeat. Also Brad Mehldau, Deantoni Parks, Tigran Hamasyan, Bon Iver. I've been revisiting my punk/rock days listening to Closure In Moscow, Pierce The Veil, etc. 'Chet Baker Sings' is something I'll always come back to.

- Taylor of Brekky Boy,Sydney

Thanks to these artists for sharing with us, and we’ll be back next week to talk with them about what parts of quarantine they're learning to appreciate.

In the meantime, join us daily in Sofar’s listening room for livestreams, where you can donate directly to the performing artists.
