In sports, the second string is a euphemism for, well, second best. In music, the second string can be a reference to the American folk styles that play second fiddle to the pop music on the airwaves. Hailing from Washington, DC, the Second String Band creates music that, while perhaps overlooked, has deep roots in our nation's cultural identity; music that "speaks to the part of us that often lies below the surface but is longing to be unearthed" (Curator Magazine). The group has an undeniably powerful stage presence rooted in the roaring pathos of gospel street bands, performing songs that shout and whisper new meaning to traditions ranging from old time, honky tonk, bluegrass and country. They've opened for Scythian, David Wax Museum, and Pearl and the Beard, played as part of the international SOFAR series, and busked through the streets of Europe; but at heart they remain a collective of excitable music fans that live for a good time. Give us your poor, your needy, your sick…we'll give them the Second String Band.
