Prakriti Deuja, a DMV native, is making history as a Nepalese American pop R&B singer-songwriter. As the first Nepalese American to perform at the NBA, as an opening act for various concerts, and at multiple political events, Prakriti knew from a young age that being a recording artist was her calling. But, the path to music was anything but linear. Growing up in the quiet suburbs of Centreville, VA in a traditional Nepalese household, Prakriti was the first in her family to consider a career in the arts. And, as first-gen, attempting to go on an uncharted and uncertain path meant breaking a lot of rules and a lot of expectations. She knew accomplishin what her parents immigrated here for was something she had to do - so school became her primary focus for a few years until after graduation, where she realized her heart belonged to music. Since then, she has earned recognition through her sassy lyrics, catchy melodies, and subtle but strong runs. Her singles, “I’m Sorry”, “Friends Can Break Your Heart Too”, “I Got It Like That”, and "Sunshine", further proved that her storytelling technique and soulful voice connect to audiences across the globe, with a following in both the United States and Nepal. Although her show-stopping voice and strong songwriting skills are a few things Prakriti is known for, she hopes to also be remembered by her demand for authenticity and representation. Being a daughter of immigrants meant having to navigate this creative career on her own (family members still ask “are you sure you don’t want to be a doctor?”), and it is thus a priority for her to continue building space for API and Nepalese artists like herself. With her passionate personality and powerful voice, Prakriti gracefully emotes her many feelings into the music she creates. She is excited for the next era of her life, with more music and more growth in it. Watch out for Prakriti as she paves her way to becoming a household name.
