Near East Trio

Performed in Sofar Toronto

Near East – Ravi Naimpally (tabla), Demetri Petsalakis (oud/lyra/saz), Ernie Tollar (sax/bansuri/ney) – is inventing its own world-music convention, by bringing together several world music traditions. The Inception of Near East's music begins in the maqam and iqa' of the Middle East and Greece, gives way to the raga and tala concepts of North and South India, ultimately evolving into group improvisation. The roots cross-pollinate on their own, evolving without additives, without taking anything away; from those foundations, Near East harvests a fresh sound, familiar yet surprising. Near East is releasing their debut recording on CD and vinyl on May 19 at the Small World Music Centre 180 Shaw St. studio 101 8pm featuring special guests Majd Sekkar (clarinet) and Tamer Pinarbasi (qanun)
