Mika's love of music and her will to be immersed in a multitude of sounds and colors brought her to relocate to New York City aged just 21. There she received a scholarship to the prestigious New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and began performing in several of the city’s best known venues, and played with some of the rising stars in the New York City music scene.
It was during these years in NYC that Mika began to create her own sound built on an incredible sense of storytelling and anchored by her deeply expressive vocals that soar one moment and are down to earth, sweet and soothing in the next. With production being handled by Matt Pierson (who has worked with such luminaries as Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman, Pat Metheny, and Jane Monheit), along with lush arrangements from flutist and collaborator Hadar Noiberg and topped with the mastery of her band comprised of NYC’s hottest young players, Mika’s captivating delivery is mature, deep, and heartfelt.
Pierson says of Mika: “She is a rare artist who seems totally familiar yet defies category. When I think of comparable artists (Bjork, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush), It’s not because she sounds like or is influenced by them - it’s the fact that she has a similar sense of brazen originality”.
