Flunk

Sometime in late autumn 2000 coincidence put the three core members of Flunk together. Ulf Nygaard, producer and front man of a platinum selling Norwegian pop act, was working on some instrumental tracks. Jo Bakke came in to add some guitar, and later Anja Øyen Vister did some improvised vocals on a few tracks. She also did vocals on a cover of the New Order club classic, ‘Blue Monday’. The latter are still their most popular recording, included on lots of compilations, in several movies and even gave name to a ‘music genre’ in the early 2000s: Folktronica. These sessions, after some serious cutting up and sorting out, became Flunk’s debut album ’For Sleepyheads Only’, released 20 years ago this year, in 2002. The album came at the height of the chill-out era, just after the success of Röyksopp. Good years for Norwegian electronic pop music. Since the debut Flunk have toured the world, from Los Angeles to Hong Kong, St Petersburg and Istanbul, and two lengthy tours in China. The band have released seven studio albums, several remix albums and two albums of home recorded cover songs. They have previously played Sofar on two occasions, in their hometown of Oslo, Norway.
