Born in the 90s Belfast singer, songwriter Rebecca Ava Calvert, going by the moniker ‘Ava Calii’ grew up listening to Celine Dion and Whitney Houston, the power ballads that sparked a dream of one day becoming a singer however, growing up extremely shy and introverted a school choir solo wasn’t even on the cards. It wasn’t until her early 20s travelling in the Middle East she picked up a guitar and started to sing, that people stopped to notice and told her her voice was a gift and she needed to release her own music. That seed of encouragement motivated her to start writing and fast forward to 2018 when she met her husband Stephen, turned DIY producer, they started to develop her lyrics into fully self produced tracks, 3 of which will be released in 2022. Being raised in the church growing up on gospel music and 90s pop to more recent influences like Amy Winehouse, London Grammar, Lana Del Rey, Leon and Hozier her vulnerable lyrics are blended with a dynamic range of genres, from electronic dream/alt-pop to gospel and Neo-soul. Her debut track ‘Brighter Days’ is out now. This track was influenced by Ava’s own personal battle with comparison. The struggle and tension of wishing you were further on in life while trying to learn to be content with where you are and what you have right now. Both vulnerable and relatable she hopes the messages her songs carry will bring hope and light to people who listen.
